Bonds backs McGwire, Rose for Hall of Fame Tuesday 01/19/2007
Barry Bonds has thrown his weight behind Mark McGwire and Pete Rose, saying his fellow sluggers fully deserve a place in baseball's Hall of Fame. Bonds, the target of an ongoing probe into possible perjury for saying he had never knowingly taken any performance enhancing drugs when he testified in a steroid case in 2003, spoke on his arrival in the Dominican Republic for the Juan Marichal Golf Classic. "I hope he gets more votes in the coming years," Bonds said of McGwire, who was denied entry into the Hall of Fame for the first time by the Baseball Writers' Association of America last week. Bonds, who played outfield for the San Francisco Giants last year, said Rose should also be in Cooperstown, given his standing as a career hits leader. McGwire, under a cloud of suspicion for alleged steroid use was snubbed by Hall of Fame voters last week despite hitting 583 home runs during his illustrious career with the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. He has never tested positive for steroids. The voters may be faced with a similar dilemma with Bonds, who is 22 home runs behind Hank Aaron's all-time mark of 755 but has also been tainted by accusations of steroid use. Rose is baseball's all-time leader in hits but has been banned from the sport -- and the Hall of Fame -- after admitting he gambled on baseball games. Despite recent reports that his contract renewal talks with the Giants have broken down, Bonds told reporters he was set on beating Aaron's record this year and winning his own spot in the Hall of Fame.
